We know that the challenges of the XXI century cities are multiple and complex. To overcome them new tools and judgment in their use will be needed. Social networks generate vast amount of information with potential to be used in the planning of the city and in the solution of the problems of its inhabitants. The challenge is to make sense of this accumulation of unstructured data and extract valuable information, without affecting the right to privacy and or generate it to those who generate it.

In the image that follows you can see the geographical origin of Tweets discussing about the State of public and private transport for a day of October in the metropolitan area of the city of Buenos Aires.

Tools for georeferencing data (GIS or Geographic Information Systems) are less recent, and its use is widely proven in hundreds of fields of knowledge, including urban planning. In recent years the explosion in the amount of data generated by electronic devices has increased the potential for such tools. The challenge is to generate information from the raw data and do so responsibly.

Accordingly, we rescued an image from a previous project where we crossed the last Argentine population census (year 2010) information spatially, and detect the influence of the suburban railways of Buenos Aires on the places and the way of life of the people of the city.

Figure 2. Indicators of the social and economic of the last census of Argentina reflecting its relationship with the transportation network (suburban railway).

In other words, in the first example shown the potential of using data social referenced citizens through networks geo and time to understand and manage the transport, while in the second example we show how the provision of transportation structure in the territory and is clearly related to the socio-economic indicators of the inhabitants, the further away is public transport worst are the indicators.

As stated before, the cities are complex systems of reality and they have great influence on the conditions of well-being of their inhabitants, in BerecoLabs we are developing new approaches for their planning and management.
